Out of the gritty, artsy resort town of St. Andrews-By-The-Sea comes Wheel*er/, the latest musical incarnation of Jake Hubbard's "roots rock" original sound. With the added intricacy of Troy Arseneault's guitar riffs, the stamina and rhythmic thrust of Paul Mahar's guitar, the solid bass lines of Keith MacPherson, and less than a shoestring for a budget, Wheel*er/ managed to put together its first CD. Produced by Michael Ramey and recorded by Larry Saunders, the disc's vivid energy and soulful acoustic arrangements manage to capture the 60-hours-straight "guerrilla" recording session which brought it into creation.

For their stint at the East Coast Music Awards in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Wheeler expanded their sound and numbers to include Colin McCarten on percussion, and Steve Gaw, formerly of Ottawa's Freephonic, on drums. While the band's focus is mostly acoustic on their CD, Wheeler's live performances are too dangerous for words. Currently Wheeler is the house band at St. Andrews' own Tidal Pool, but when they're not playing locally they 're showing off their latest sounds before bar- dwellers and festival-goers all over the Maritimes. Wheeler has opened for bands such as Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew, and Grand Theft Bus. Last summer, they played a "command performance" for actors Billy Baldwin and Jodi Lynne O'Keefe at a wrap party to celebrate their work on a locally produced film--and that's a performance they'll never forget.
